FCBD Festival Map 2018

We're about a month out from Free Comic Comic Book Festival. As usual, we're taking over the parking lot for all of our festival activities: live Supreme Pro Wrestling, West Coast Avengers cosplayer, Vader's 501st troopers, face painting, balloon sculptures, games, and more.

Plus, this year, we're planning to have our exhibitors out-of-doors! It's going to be an amazing comic book festival. Coming soon, we'll post complete festival details.

6 Stand-Up Reasons To Laugh Your Freckle-Muffin Off Friday Night

6. It’s 100% Free laughs. Every last Friday of the month, starting at 8 PM. Check out FB Calendar for upcoming events and the lineup.

5. Our host’s own laughter will crack you up. It’s so contagious. He’s Mr. Joe-Joe Louis. He holds a PhD in English and is the creator and producer of both Comedy Night at Empires and the Secret Moving Van Show, both in Sacramento. He is also the creator of Joe-Joe Has Fun, a twice-daily Let's Play show starring both him and comedian Kim Martel.

4. There may — or not — be singing. Especially if Christian Amaral has anything to sing about it. He is the co-host of the monthly High Anxiety Variety Show, as well as the creator of 3 failed podcasts.

3. People wear cool stuff with, like, skulls. Yeah, skulls. Take Robert Barry, for instance. As the creator and writer behind the long standing pop culture site retroCRUSH, he's written hundreds of essays, interviews, and film reviews. Can’t wait to see what he wears Friday night.

2. One comedian may be punnier than the others.
We’re talking about Damian Harmony. He, along with his partner Daniel Humbarger, has run the Capitol PUNishment pun tournament in Sacramento for the last year. He is a father of two, and could really use the money from comedy so that his kids can eat meat sometimes. So, please, make good use of the tip car. See also, bullet point #3, again.

And the #1 reason to laugh your freckle-muffin off with us every last Friday of the month is...

1. Random stuff happens, for example, A.J. DeMello landing in the #1 spot of this post. Oh, yeah, lots more random headed your way. With a delivery ranging from caveman to out right joker, A.J.'s sharp, no-nonsense material and nonchalant pacing leave audiences laughing and hurting.

The Year of the Creatives Begins Today

You probably noticed how much we love Sacramento. If not, just take a look at our calendar of events -- past and present.

In 2017, we've decided to really connect the dots. We're celebrating creatives and creative acts all year long.

Get into Sacramento's creative culture

We hope you'll join us in getting to know Sacramento's creative culture. Maybe you'll learn something about our creative community that you didn't know or hadn't experienced before. If you do, please share it with us.

Do something creative you haven't done before

Today is the first day of 2017. Three hundred and sixty-four days from today what creative endeavors would you like to have accomplished? Better yet, how about 90 days from now? What one or two new creative endeavors are on your bucket list? Let's do it -- together -- because we have one or two things on our list also.

Next time you're in the shop, asks us what we're up to and let us know what's on your list. Also, stay tuned for new opportunities to experience Sacramento's creative culture.

And if you're not already on our mailing list, you might want to sign up. It's going to be an exciting year.

Give Big Sacramento

UPDATE 05.13.2014: Sacramento citizens raised more than $3,000,000 during the 24 hours of Big Day of Giving on May 6, 2014! Congratulations, and thank you all for participating!

May has been amazing for us. Just look at what we've experienced so far this month:
GiveBigDOGFor three days in a row it's been all about our own enjoyment. Now today, May 6, 2014, we have the opportunity to show our pride as citizens of Sacramento. At midnight, May 6, the Big Day of Giving started.

How To Participate In Big Day of Giving

Empire's Comics Vaults store mascot
Oh, yeah, GiveBigDOG.
Big Day of Giving is a chance to become more familiar with our local nonprofits and a chance to support them by means of our donations. Our goal as a city is to give ONE MILLION DOLLARS in this 24-hour period. To participate, check out the list of participating nonprofits, click on the name of the organization you'd like to support, and then donate in any amount you can.

We hope everyone will consider giving to a cause you believe in whether it's literacy, the arts, homelessness, conservation, etc.

There's quite a conversation around this topic on Twitter using the hashtag, #GiveBigDOG... but as you can see from the picture below, not everyone thinks that's the best hashtag to use.

Our favorite Derby Girls will be down on FCBD 2014!

Women's and junior's roller derby located in beautiful Sacramento, California.

We're excited to have the Sac City Rollers join us for a second year at our Free Comic Book Day Mini-Con.

This year, FCBD Mini-Con is Saturday, May 3, 2014. Doors open at 9 am.

The Athletic Brilliance of the Sac City Rollers

The Sac City Rollers, Sacramento’s first all-women’s flat track roller derby league, is made up of well over 100 active skaters dedicated to the amazing sport of Roller Derby. On June 1, 2012, the Sac City Rollers graduated from the WFTDA Apprentice Program and are proud to be a full-fledged WFTDA league!

Established in January of 2006, the league has quickly grown to include traveling interleague teams (the Capital Punishers and the Folsom Prison Bruisers), intraleague teams (the Sweaty Betties, the Rude Girls, and our newest team, the Notorious Knockouts), and our Junior Derby League (the Bad Apples) for girls 10 – 17 years old.

The women of the Sac City Rollers practice three times a week and schedule a competitive bouting season locally and nationally from March to December.

They wrap up each season by hosting their own "Red Red Holiday Invitational" in which skaters from over a dozen West Coast Roller Derby leagues compete, and proceeds are donated to the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services.

Operating as a non-profit, self-governed organization, the Sac City Rollers strive to promote Roller Derby, but also serve our community by providing unparalleled competition and entertainment. In addition to community outreach, Sac City Rollers members volunteer their time and raise money for local and national charities such as Sacramento Children’s Home, the Sacramento Food Bank and the Saint Baldrick’s Foundation.

The Sac City Roller's Mission Statement

"We acknowledge the support that we receive from our surrounding communities and strive to reciprocate that support by being involved in local charities through donations and volunteer work. SCR is an enthusiastic supporter of Roller Derby leagues locally, nationally and internationally."

Interview with creator of Shaman's Destiny and founder of Big Tree Comics

We're pleased to have Kyrun Silva join us at Free Comic Book Day Mini-Con 2014 on Saturday, May 3, 2014. Kyrun embodies what this celebration is about: A love for bringing ideas to life. We think you'll enjoy this interview with Kyrun and hope you'll take some time to pick up and read his new book, Shaman's Destiny.

Kyrun Silva was born and raised in Sacramento, CA. His earliest memories are of drawing characters in his room while blaring cartoons on TV. As a young boy, Kyrun couldn't stop drawing and creating.

He says, "I always knew I wanted to grow up and do something with my artwork. I was fascinated with everything from cartoons to sci-fi, fantasy and other geeky things, but comic books was my main addiction. From the storytelling to the beautiful artwork, I knew I had to be a part of this world."

Last year, the prodding and pushing of his wife and friends moved Kyrun to publish his own series, and thus was born Big Tree Comics to house his ideas and stories. His first book was “Shaman’s Destiny”. Kyrun wrote, drew, inked, and lettered the book, taking about 3 months from start to finish.

"This book is going to be everything I love in fantasy stories. I wanted to create a fantasy story like Avatar The Last Airbender, The NeverEnding Story, The Lord of the Rings or Skullkickers, but I wanted to set it in the real world."

The goal of Big Tree Comics is to create stories with diversity -- not just diversity in the characters, but in the stories as well. Kyrun adds, "Though I love superhero comics, I want to make more than just the standard spandex stories. I have ideas that range from fantasy, to supernatural to superheroes. With each book I want to create tales that bring lasting memories to the reader and hopefully inspire someone to also create their own story."

The Kyrun Silva Interview

Empire's: Tell us a little about your creative process.

Kyrun: My process is to sit down at the computer and start writing. Then I thumbnail what I’ve just written. After that, I tear up the page I just drew and start over. After redrawing the same page a few times, I cry for 30 minutes and scream to the heavens for inspiration. Then I take the torn up pages from the first attempt and think, “Hey, this wasn’t as bad as I thought it was,” and redraw it exactly like I did the first time.

Empire's: Who inspires you to draw?

Kyrun: I draw inspiration from my wife and my mother.

My mom, a single-parent, raised me. She worked multiple jobs and commuted long hours every day to provide for my sister and me the best life she could. Watching her work hard made me realize that I needed to push myself to reach my dreams.

My wife grew up speaking English as a second language. Also, as a child, she didn't have a lot. She pushed herself through high school and earned a college degree while working and carrying our first son. She inspires me to keep pushing myself and not give up on goals.

Empire's: Why do you love what you do?

Kyrun: I do what I do because I’ve always wanted to make comic books. I grew up drawing all the time. At times, when I should have been studying for school or doing homework, I always found myself drawing. I would find myself sitting down with a pencil and a sheet of paper and just drawing for hours at a time.

That love of drawing stayed with me to this day. Even when I’m at my 9 to 5 job now, I find myself doodling and drawing everyday and trying to stay creative whenever I can. It's an obsession of mine. I'm always wanting to push myself.

Empire's: So, do you have anything special planned for our Free Comic Book Day Mini-Con?

Kyrun: I am debuting issue #2 of my series “Shaman’s Destiny”. I will also have a couple of prints for sale. I plan on doing sketches at the show. I'll be giving them away to kids.

Empire's: That's fantastic. Very exciting. Tell us about some of your favorite comic books and movies.

Kyrun: My favorite comic book: I can’t pick just one! There so many great comics and series that I’ve read over the years. Here are some of my favorite books: “The Dark Phoenix Saga”, “Dark Knight Returns”, “Watchmen”, “Darkhawk”, “Batman: Court of Owls”, “The Walking Dead”, “The Ultimates” “Skullkickers” and “Saga”. I could go on, but I would bore you.

Favorite Comic Book movie: The Avengers. Easily, the Avengers.  Avengers had just the right combination of action and comedy that made me enjoy every minute of it. Though I love movies like the Dark Knight, X-Men 2, Batman, Superman, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Hellboy.

Empire's: Nice. We love many of those same books and movies. Of course, you know we love music, too. So, when you're creating comics, what do you listen to?

Kyrun: I don’t have one particular artist I listen to. I mostly turn on Slacker Radio and stream music until I’m tired. I grew up a 90’s kid, so my music is filled with a lot of R&B, Alternative and Hip Hop. I throw in some rock every once in awhile, nothing too heavy though. I’ll even listen to gospel and Korean pop sometimes when I draw.

Empire's: What are two things you've learned from creating comics?

Kyrun: 1) I've learned that I have to get better when it comes to my writing and drawing. Even though I have been drawing since I was 5 years old, there is so much that I need to improve upon to get better and to become more consistent.

2) I've learned that there is so much that goes into creating a book. I knew it was a lot of work before, but the amount of time it takes to produce a book, when you’re doing it on your own is staggering. All the little things no one told me about, like font styles and word balloon placements, I didn’t realize that the little things can take up just as much time as drawing and writing.

Empire's: Lastly, as you know, we're big supporters of all things local. Tell us, please, what do you love about Sacramento?

Kyrun: I love Sacramento because it’s small enough where if you know someone, more than likely you will have a common friend or relative. It amazes me how often I will meet someone and later find out we have a handful of people we both know. I also love Sacramento because of the diversity. You can walk down most neighborhoods in Sacramento and see so many different cultures and religions and ideas. It’s a huge melting pot and those combinations of different upbringings and backgrounds helps to provide inspiration and great stories.

Write A Novel, Screenplay or Comic This November

All month long, November 2013, we're participating in NaNoWriMo -- National Novel Writing Month. Of course, we realize that you may not want to write a novel but a comic or movie screenplay instead. Write what you want! Every Friday night starting at 5pm.

What is NaNoWriMo?

NaNoWriMo is an annual event that takes place each November with the goal of motivating professional and amateur writers to complete writing 50,000 words of their novel.

Naturally, because the comic book creating and writing community is so important to us, we've expanded to include anyone who wants to join a motivated group of people to write something.

Write With Us Every Friday Night

Come down to Empire's every Friday night, starting at 5pm, in November to meet others who are working hard to write, and put in some serious writing time. This is the 3rd year we have participated in this and it has been a lot of fun. We hope to see you all there.
