Comic Book Reading Session Three

This is the third and final post in a series of guest posts from comics fan, Alic Reader. There are links to the first two posts in the content below. ^Ben

The distance between this post and the last post in the series illustrates the ebb and flow of my reading.

Like I said, "my reading piles up."

Today I found myself reading Transformers: Last Bot Standing.

The cover of the lone Transformer walking into the sunset captured my attention, calling on my love of Westerns. So I picked it up, but...

I have a love-hate relationship with Transformers comics. I'm crazy about robots. I want to love these books, but I rarely do. The last Beast Wars reboot almost held my attention, but then I lost interest.

So I'm reading Last Bot Standing and the opening four pages are magic. Then suddenly all these humanoids are talking, using lots of words. I skimmed, taking in the plentiful, gorgeous art instead.

Tighten up the dialogue, and this book is golden (a known preference of mine). Still, issue two is already on its way to me. I'll see what happens after that.

Of course, I'm reading while watching The Orville: New Horizons. No surprise there.

Finishing Jeff Lemire's Primordial was like singing a song I know the words to but don't quite get the meaning. That's what I get for reading while watching TV. No matter. I loved it. I'll be reading it again and giving it my full attention.

Speaking of comics with a lot of words, I recently finished The Great Darkness Saga. I don't usually read older comics, because, wow, culture shock. The writing of yesteryear feels so archaic. It gives me a feeling similar to when I started watching The Office (US). It takes me a minute to downshift. In this case, about three-quarters of the way through The Great Darkness Saga I finally downshift enough to enjoy it, and all of a sudden, it ended.

Moving on, I read Captain Carter, issue 1. The first two-thirds features intense dialogue, and the whole time I’m just pining for one thing—action. And then it hits! And before I know it, it’s over, leaving only one thing on my mind—more, please.

And now I want more New Masters. New Masters by Shobo and Shof does some amazing world building and features gorgeous art. As I think about it now, I may need to finish that series after all.

Finally, the wordless Step by Bloody Step by Si Spurrier and Matías Bergara is my kind of book—wordless.

That’s a wrap. Thanks for hanging out.
