Melissa McCommon returns to FCBD Mini-Con


We're pleased to welcome back self-taught artist and comic book creator Melissa McCommon.

Melissa joined us for our very first mini-con -- FCBD Mini-Con 2012. She was also at FCBD Mini-Con 2013, our food drive fundraiser, and at our very first Creative Women Mini-Con in 2013.

While continuing work on her graphic novel, "Guardian," Melissa provides weekly updates to her ongoing webcomic, "Epic Chaos!"

She's also our own local poster child for learning to read from comics.

SACRAMENTO’S TWO BIGGEST COMIC BOOK PUBLISHERS HOSTING FOOD DRIVE TO BENEFIT SENIOR CITIZEN SERVICES, INC.

Saturday, November 16th, 2013 11AM-4PM

This year Sacramento’s two largest comic book publishers, Scattered Comics and ECV Press, are teaming up for our annual food drive to benefit Sacramento’s elderly community.



Our Food For Comics Drive will showcase Jason Dube’s Scattered Comics and Ben Schwartz’s ECV Press. Each company will be bringing in writers and artists who will be on hand to speak with the fans, do live art, and of course sign and sell their books. Each creator will be providing special deals on their books and product for canned food donations. See special guests and donation deals below.

This Saturday, November 16, 2013, from 11am-4pm, Food For Comics Drive attendees at Empire’s Comics Vault will enjoy great local books, meet amazing creators and most importantly support Senior Citizen Services Inc., a food service organization that provides reduced-fee food boxes to those in need.

Joining them will be horror hostess Miss Misery of the popular San Francisco television shows “Miss Misery’s Movie Massacre” and “The Last Doorway Show.” She is also a regular on “Creepy Kofy Movie Time” and hosts the annual “A Nightmare To Remember” film festival. Miss Misery stars in her own comics that include “Miss Misery’s A Haunting Desire,” “Forgotten Tales,” and “Creepy kofy Movie Time.”

Melissa McCommon is a self-taught artist and comic book writer. Growing up in Vacaville, California, Melissa was a child who struggled with reading, however, by means of comic books, she taught herself to read. Since then, she has loved the comic book medium.

After self publishing her first comic book "Carnation," Melissa was hired by Scattered Comics to draw for the studio's comic "Caffeine Poisoned." You can find Melissa's books at Empire's Comics Vault on the Local Shelf. Ask Ben to help you find them.

Melissa keeps herself busy with her on-going webcomic "Epic Chaos!" Melissa attends conventions in California regularly and is also a co-panelist with Creative Women Mini-Con creator-artist Heather Jaeger, giving artist/writer help in their panel series "From Fan to Creator!

Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is one of the best Geek Holidays ever! On Saturday, May 5, Empire’s Comics Vault is hosting a FCBD Mini-Con with an amazing line-up of locals -- and they have the promo videos to prove it! Here’s who you’ll find at the Sacramento comic shop that day:

Noir Amador is a prolific Sacramento artist who will be giving out his all ages mini-comic for Free Comic Book Day.     


Cartoonist, comedian and podcast Junior Bruce will be hand to show his work and to give out his 2012 Free Comic Book Day coloring book.


Daniel Bethel and Eben Burgoon’s Eben 07 tells the tales of the spy world’s “covert custodian -- espionage janitor.” Enjoy Eben07 in print and online.


Plotless Comics is the creation of Matt Marchetti and Cory Patten. They’ve been drawing Rabbit-Walrus and Sadocat since 1992.



Jason Dube of Scattered Comics will attend along with three Scattered Comics Studios’ artists. He will also debut a Scattered Comics Sampler, courtesy of RA Comics printers, for 2012 Free Comic Book Day.

We’re proud to have Neil Reihle for his first ever public appearance. Neil will be giving out a special Free Comic Book Day release that is currently in the works.


John Cottrell will be featuring a special Grim Law ashcan at Empire’s FCBD Mini-Con.


Mark MachMann’s recently collaborated on The Yowling Anthology of Random & Neato Stories. Signed copies will be available at the Mini-Con.

Hainanu Saulque grew up on a small reservation in Benton, CA. He spent his youth fighting off Indian folk tale monsters and defeated them all. Sacramento native Craig Glenn will showcase his artistic works. The only thing Craig loves more than comics might possibly be drawing comics.

You'll have fun with funny man and artist Mike Gray, Pencil for Hire. Mike has a wide array of experience, from animated series pitches, Flash animation, background layouts & paintings, music, sfx, voice-over, and animated e-card creation.
