14 Reasons to put one comic book title on an Empire's pull list

December 31 marks the last day to qualify for what might be the best benefit of our Comic Book Savings Program -- VIP Status at Free Comic Book Day in 2015. So, if you're thinking about it, don't hesitate, sign up with just one title on a pull list before the end of the year.

Rolly is ready for the Ugly Sweater Contest. Have you entered yet?

Besides that, our customers tell us they love Empire's Comic Book Savings Program. You might like it too.

Need 14 reasons? Ok, here's what people are saying about the program:

  1. Love the monthly benefit, but honestly I'd have a pull list anyways! Having some books set aside on FCBD was truly excellent though, so I could make sure I got some that I was really pumped about. - Alex D.
  2. Awe. Some. - Lambert W.
  3. I think it's fantastic! I never have to worry about missing out on the books I read and I'm comforted knowing that if I have to wait a while to pick 'em up, Ben totally has my back and won't put my stuff back on the shelf. Oh, and the coupons, sales, promos, etc.. why, they're the ultimate icing on the cake! - Rebecca S.
  4. So far I've enjoyed the benefits of the Saver Program, especially the short line for FBCD and the back issue sales. Anything that discounts new comics or trades will always beneficial, especially for us on a strict monthly entertainment budget. - Nathan W.
  5. I think it's really great. I love how each month it's a surprise as to what the offer is going to be. - Brian C.
  6. I have liked, and used, most of the benefits so far. - Tom
  7. The Comic Book Savings Program applies to people who have Empire save new comics for them to purchase when they come into the store. As a result of being a regular customer, we get discounts on occasion and special treatment (like pulling out our requested books on Free Comic Book Day -- awesome!). So, it definitely makes having my saver stack at Empire more worth while, if that actually is what the program is. - Ernst S.
  8. The comic book savings program is one of the better comic savings programs I've been apart of. Most require a minimum of books on your list and only offer a 5% discount on books through ur list. Empires program gives you various discounts on top of your comic list discount. Every month they email different promotions that are exclusive to members of the program, it makes me feel valued. - Josue G.
  9. It's the only way to collect comics, it keeps me from missing issues! - Patty F.
  10. I love it :) It's a great way to show you appreciate your customers! - Roshawn R.
  11. The Saving program has been cool, and it makes me feel special. It doesn't hurt that its also funny (the power girl one). - Daryl G.
  12. It's been great, ease of updating saver is the best. - Mitch
  13. With the saver I don't miss out on specials and those short print runs.  Also Ben gets to know your tastes and will slip in something that I may miss other wise. Top notch service always!  - Bill M.
  14. It is a great program. The monthly specials are a nice bonus and most always something I take advantage of. Free bags & boards also a quality perk. - Logan W.
p.s. There are only 14 days left to sign up before 12/31/14! Sign up in the shop or print a form and drop it off.

Uncover the Secrets Hidden Under Locke & Key

Locke & Key is Empire's January 2015 Reading Selection

Join the discussion
Date: Thursday, January 8, 2015
Time:  6:30 – 7:30pm, PST
Do family dramas, gruesome horror, bone-chilling suspense, and portals into other dimensions hold a fascination for you? If so, then it’s time you opened up a copy of Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft. You’ll meet the Locke family and discover that they have more than their fair share of family skeletons (demons, and spirits, and ghosts, oh my!) in their ancestral closets.
In a story created by Joe Hill (son of horror master Stephen King) and Gabriel Rodriguez, IDW Publishing unleashed the Locke family demons into the world back in February of 2008 in an issue that sold out in a single day. The Locke & Key series went on to win British Fantasy Awards in 2009 and 2012 for Best Comic or Graphic Novel and multiple 2011 Eisner Awards. Despite a failed TV series adaptation that same year, a film trilogy based on the complete Locke & Key series was officially announced at Comic Con 2014.
Whether you’re already fans of Tyler, Kinsey and Bode Locke or we’ve only just piqued your curiosity to learn more about their intriguing family secrets, you’ll want to join us for our January Graphic Novel Reading Club discussion.

Read Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft. Then join our Graphic Novel Reading Club.

On the second Thursday in January, we’ll explore what’s hidden under Locke & Key, discussing everything from the art and the characters, to the delivery, the plot and the story arcs.
If you’re possessed by a spirt of curiosity and eager to share your input, here are six doors of debate we’ll unlock and open at our upcoming reading night:
  • Did the opening of the story confuse or intrigue you?
  • What clues and telling details did you find within the book’s various artwork panels?
  • Did you feel any empathy for Sam Lesser? If so, why?
  • Does the quality of the content justify the gore?
  • Do the series of flashbacks serve the story or distract from it?
  • How many magical keys are too many?
Join the discussion if you’ve got the soul (and the stomach!) for it! Thursday, January 8, 2015 from 6:30 – 7:30pm, PST here at Empire’s.

Artist Benjamin Bryan featured in Empire's Art Gallery

Sacramento artist Ben Cesena
Meet December's Artist: Benjamin Bryan

All month long, you can come in to admire the works of local artist, Benjamin Bryan. If his style seems familiar, it's because you may remember his Hulk pieces which included Hulk Hogan.

He returns this month with his interpretations of the Batman, Flash and Zoom, and the Dinosaur and the Sandwich. We'll post the pictures here, but it's better to see the real thing.

These small to large sized pieces make a fine addition to any collection.

Enjoy Benjamin's works through December 31, 2014.

Dinosaur $80; Sandwich $45; Set $105
The Dinosaur and The Sandwich

$95 each
The Batman

Toys make a brighter day during a darker time

Starting today and ending Friday, December 19, we're running a toy drive to benefit the Children's Receiving Home of Sacramento.

Help collect toys for children in need. The Children's Receiving Home of Sacramento offers many services and programs, including providing emergency shelter for children "affected by abuse, neglect, and trauma." During this holiday time, your gifts can brighten their day.

So, let's join together this holiday season to help these children make the best of a difficult time. Then, bring them in and drop them off at Empire's and we'll deliver them on Saturday, December 20.

Gift tips for tweens

1. Please bring only *unwrapped* toys.
2. Shop for a boy or a girl or both.
3. Select items appropriate for ages 11-15.
4. Download this list of specific ideas, need and children's wish lists to help you select the perfect gift.
5. Drop off your toys at Empire's and we'll deliver them on 12/20/14.

We'll keep a list at the store, so we can track how we're doing in finishing this list overall. Thank you, all, for supporting children in need during this time of the year. Hopefully in 2015, we'll be able to raise funds during a non-holiday time, since difficult times happen all year.

Rat Queens take on Empire’s Graphic Novel Reading Club

Empire’s Graphic Novel Reading Club reads and discusses a diverse selection of collected comic books and graphic novels, from the thought-provoking to the entertaining. All are welcome. Read your own copy or pick up one at the shop. Join the next discussion on Thursday, December 11, 2014 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm at Empire’s Comics Vault.

"Who are the Rat Queens? A pack of booze-guzzling, death-dealing battle maidens-for-hire, and they're in the business of killing all god's creatures for profit. It's also a darkly comedic sass-and-sorcery series starring Hannah the Rockabilly Elven Mage, Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, Dee the Atheist Human Cleric and Betty the Hippy Smidgen Thief. This modern spin on an old school genre is a violent monster-killing epic that is like Buffy meets Tank Girl in a Lord of the Rings world on crack."

1. It requires only one current comic book title.
2. Every time that title comes out, we reserve a copy for you.
3. Pick up at least once a month to stay in good standing.
4. Change the title as often as you want. Add more. Go back down to one.

Yeah. That's it.
