Art, Music, Comics, and Community in December

We have a month full of good times just waiting for you.

All month long, the gorgeous art of Sarah Kraft is featured in Empire's Art Gallery. Be sure to join us for her art reception on December 17.

We're all about the bands -- especially Ghoul School and Dog Rifle! They're playing Empire's After Hours on December 16.

Check out their melodious tunes and then come see them live in the shop.

THIS FRIDAY, we're bringing all the best laughs and putting them into the shop for Empire's After Hours' Stand Up Comedy. This is for mature audiences only (i.e., not for the kids!).

On December 8, join our comic book discussion group as we talk about Empowered (Vol. 1) by Adam Warren.

A whole bunch of us from the shop are going to see Rogue One on December 15. Want to join us? There might be space.

Finally, our annual TOY DRIVE with Sacramento Comic Creator's Group runs through the 17th. Please bring toys and other gifts for children in need. We'll deliver them to the Sacramento Children's Receiving Home where they'll be placed with children. If you want to go above and beyond, check out their Wish List.

Marian Call Performing at Empire's Comics - 1 Night Only!

* We recommend pressing play on this sweet track by Marian Call and enjoying her song, "Good Morning Moon," while you read this post.

Wednesday, October 26th, from 7-9pm we are excited to welcome Marian Call to the shop for a 1-night-only performance.

Singer-Songwriter Marian Call Comes to Sacramento

Marian Call. Photo (c) Brian Adams. Used by permission.
Marian Call. Photo (c) Brian Adams. Used by permission.
Marian is a singer-songwriter based in Juneau, Alaska. She enjoys the enthusiastic endorsement of some of our favorite web celebrities, including Felicia Day, Peter Sagal, Wil Wheaton, Paul F. Tompkins, and Adam Savage of the Mythbusters.

Need we say more? Oh, but we will.

She has played on the Jonathan Coulton Cruise and has toured with w00tstock and the Ladies of Ragnarok (The Doubleclicks and Molly Lewis).

Marian is no stranger to comic shops and has warmed the hearts of comic shop denizens and convention-goers across the country.

This Alaskan native has 9 CDs under her belt and visits Sacramento's own Empire's Comics Vault as part of her West Coast Tour. If you don't know Marian's music, you need to. We think you'll love her music as much as we do.

The night will be an all-ages event with a geek flavor perfect for the shop.

Free at the door with suggested donations being $10-15.

Arlo Disarray and Rejected Toys at Creative Women Mini-Con

For the fourth year in a row, Empire's Comics Vault presents Creative Women Mini-Con. This year's event takes place on Saturday, October 1.

At the event you will meet 16 creative women we think you should know and support, including first time exhibitor, Arlo Disarray. Ben and Arlo sat down for an interview (below).

Arlo specializes in making unique, one-of-a-kind toys that you won't find in stores -- unless you know where to find her Etsy store (but watch out; her toys sell quickly). Each of Arlo's creations is completely unique and a limited edition of 1.

Although she may explore themes across numerous toys, she never recreates any of her one-of-a-kind toys.

Meet Arlo and experience Rejected Toys at our 4th Creative Women Mini-Con. #CWMC2016

To learn more about Arlo and her art, follow her Rejected Toys page on Facebook.

Artist Bianca Kim at Creative Women Mini-Con 2016

Creative Women Mini-Con 2016 is coming up quickly. We look forward to filling the shop with so many talented creative women.

See you for this event (and sale TBD) on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 11 a.m.

Meet Bianca Kim, Fabric + Multimedia Artist, FRESHbiscuits

Bianca joins us for her first Creative Women Mini-Con, and we can't wait for you to meet her.

Bianca started FRESHbiscuits about a decade ago while she was studying apparel design. The name, "FRESHbiscuits," calls to mind two of Bianca's favorite things -- food and comedy. Through her art, Bianca brings to life expertly designed pieces that are "simultaneously nostalgic and refreshing."

Bianca recycles fabric and uses new fabric to create limited-run pieces, including wallets, aprons, and other fabric-based articles. She specializes in creating custom embroidered fabric pinback buttons with short sayings that can be worn on backpacks, purses and jacket collars.

Connect with Bianca, a.k.a., @FRESHbiscuits on Instagram or on Twitter at @FRESHbiscuitsBK.

In the meantime, learn more about Bianca in this interview.

Zine Creator Kelly Van Gaasbeck at Creative Women Mini-Con 2016

Join us Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 11 a.m. for Creative Women Mini-Con 2016.

Ben took a few minutes to interview Kelly for this year's event. This year marks Creative Women Mini-Con's fourth year.

Meet Zine and Postcard Creator Kelly Van Gaasbeck

Kelly actively pursues her storytelling passion through zines, postcards, and mini-books. In them she weaves life's stories and precious moments.

We think you'll connect with Kelly's art the way we did and want to incorporate it into your own life. We plan on sending some of those post cards out! Hope you'll join us.

Kelly has a B.A. in multimedia from San Diego State University and has made her home in Sacramento for the last three years.

Port Fireflirt, her company, is about growing and exploring. Ports are the gateway to both entering the city or exploring the world and a “fireflirt,” Kelly explains, is "that little glimmer of familiarity and the unknown.” Connect Kelly on Facebook or Instagram

Webcomic Creator Miranda Singler at Creative Women Mini-Con 2016

Creative Women Mini-Con 2016 is Saturday, October 1.

We're pleased to welcome a first-time exhibitor, webcomic creator Miranda Singler.

Meet Webcomic Creator Miranda Singler

The mundanity of daily life. It's eccentric characters. Their hidden stories. You'll find it all in Miranda's first webcomic, Sleeping Volcano, debuting at Creative Women Mini-Con 2016.

Growing up on a farm in the Midwest and going off to college to discover life beyond the corn fields exerted a great influence on Miranda.

She’s supported by a community of artists in the Sacramento region (Sacramento Comic Creators Group), and when she’s not thinking about comics, she’s probably gazing at the Sacramento trees, trying not to eat all the cookies, and listening to KDVS.

Miranda works as a web designer. She has created comics for museums and editorial cartoons for The Daily Illini, the independent student newspaper at the University of Illinois.

To learn more about Miranda and her art, please visit her website, Mirmade.net.

Meet all the creative women participating in this year's event.

Doors open for Comic Book Savings Program Members at 10:30 a.m. and to the public at 11 a.m.

Empire’s Comics Vaults’ 13 favorite moments from 2015

We’re seven months in to 2016 and reflecting on how great 2015 was. It’s never too late to count the good things in life, right? So, in no particular order, here are our thirteen favorite things from 2015.

Creative Women Mini-Con. One of my favorite writers — and also one of Jen’s favorites — Barbara Kesel joined us for Creative Women Mini-Con. It’s a real dream come true to meet one of your comic book heroes. As a bonus, we interviewed Barbara on our podcast, Cracking the Vault (Mairghread Scott too!).

Free Comic Book Day. The Wandering Boba food truck joined us at FCBD Mini-Con! Yum. Lumpia. Boba. So much delicious happiness.

After-Hours Stand Up Comedy in the Empire’s Comics Vault Lounge. We’re proud to bring new collaborative projects to life, especially when they include Sacramento’s pool of comedic talent. Our after-hours stand up comedy has continued into 2016 and we’re looking at ways to make it even better. Comedy night is always the last Friday of the month. Check our calendar on this website or on our FB Page for additional details about our next event.

Read #1ComicADay with Empire's Comics

Last Tuesday, Ben and I were meeting to plan great things for the comic shop (I'm the marketing maven). He says to me, "I want to start reading one comic book everyday."

This sounds like one of his cockeyed plans to get me to read through some of the titles that are piling up in my "Read Pile." Turns out I have a bad reputation for keeping up on the titles I love. Just ask Joey or Patrick or Jake or the pugs...

But this is different: this time it's for himself. We commiserate about how life and work and business and the business of life get in the way and how comics get pushed aside far too easily.

And then, well... things got in the way. Two days go by but I still hadn't read anything -- not even on "New Comic Book Wednesday." So, today, Thursday, we're meeting again (there's always lots to do right before Free Comic Book Day Festival).

Before we start working, Ben says, "I want to read one comic everyday, so that's what I'm going to do first."

"Ok. Me too." So he reads Low and I read Think Tank (by Matt Hawkins who you can meet at FCBD Festival, by the way).

And thus begins a new movement, a new initiative! You are invited to join us, even if you already read one comic (or more) every day. But if you don't, we're ok being a movement of two (haha, pathetic!).

Ben will post his reads on Instagram/Twitter and I will post mine on Twitter. We'll be hashtagging it with #1ComicADay.

Turns out that this works really well: we both read three books today.

FCBD Festival 2016 map now available

Click MAP to enlarge.
We're want to make this as easy as possible as possible for the more than one thousand Savings Club Members and new friends and visitors, SO we put together this little map.

This map will show you:

  • Where to park (get here early!)
  • Where to stand:
  • And it also shows where all the fun is.
(For a better view, click on the map to enlarge it.)

There's so much fun and free comics planned. See you bright and early on Saturday, May 7. If you haven't already, add the #FCBDFestival FB event to your FB calendar to keep up with all the upcoming updates.

Top Cow's Matt Hawkins at FCBD Festival 2016

We're excited to announce that Top Cow Productions' President/COO and comic book writer Matt Hawkins will join us for Free Comic Book Day Festival 2016.

Matt has created and written more than thirty new comic book franchises for Top Cow and Image, including, to name a few, Think Tank, Symmetry, The Tithe, Necromancer, VICE, Lady Pendragon, Aphrodite IX, and Tales of Honor.

In much of his writing, Matt aims to shine a light on science. Commenting on this in an interview at Image Comics, he said:

"I've also thought for years that the sciences are kind of poorly represented to kids here in the United States in school. I have two sons in high school, and they told me how boring they found science. That struck a nerve, so I was determined to try and show scientists in a positive light. And not just billionaire geniuses like Tony Stark."

We're over the moon excited to have Matt with us for this special event. Be sure to bring your copies of the books that Matt has written so that he can sign them for you.

A complete listing of activities taking place during #FCBDFest is currently available.

Here's who you'll find at this year's event and the activities for you and the family:

FCBD Mini-Con is now Free Comic Book Day Festival

Something about this year's mini-con just didn't feel right.

But what could it be?

We didn't know either. Until we took a quick tour through some of our old photos, for example, these two photos from Free Comic Book Day Mini-Con 2013. Can you see our problem?

Exhibitors at T-18 minutes until doors open. FCBD Mini-Con 2013.

Two stormtroopers, Lalo, and a fire truck. FCBD Mini-Con 2013.
At Free Comic Book Day Mini-Con 2013 -- back in the early days of our mini-cons -- we had a small handful of exhibitors, two stormtroopers, one Lalo, and a fire truck.

Seeing these old photos was our "That's no moon" moment.

That's right: It's a space station. So, starting this year, Free Comic Book Day Mini-Con is now Free Comic Book Day Festival.

And just in case you need some evidence, check out these photos from FCBD "Mini-Con" 2014. And believe it or not, this year's festival will have even more fun than previous ones.

Our favorite shop highlights from 2015

We're 22 days away from Free Comic Book Day Mini-Con 2016 and poised to give away 20,000 free comic books!

Here's a look at just one of the pallets of boxes that we received. There were two of these. Loading and unloading these into the trucks really gave us quite the workout this morning.

So, as we draw closer to the ultimate day of the year, we thought we'd take a moment to reflect on the moments that made 2015 an amazing year -- all 15 of them!

Which of these were your favorite Empire's moments?

We'd love to hear about it. Let us know in the comments, please.

Top 15 Moments of 2015

  1. One of Ben and Jen's long time favorite comic book authors, Barbara Kesel (listen to the interview) joined us at Creative Women Mini-Con 2015. On top of that, Mairghread Scott (listen to the interview), the first woman to write a Transformers comic book and author of Toil and Trouble, also joined us!
