May is Free Comic Book Month

Here at Empire's Comics Vault, we celebrate Free Comic Book Month (FCBM). But, wait, you already know this. What you need to know is that store hours are regular Saturday hours for the rest of the month. We open at 11 a.m. on Saturdays.

Bring this each Saturday. You need it to get freebies.

Sacramento's longest Free Comic Book Day lasts all of May

Well, we're sure you picked up your FCBM Passport when you were here for the Free Comic Book Day Mini-Con. Good.

Bring it with you. You need it to access the freebies.

We'll mark off the May 9 star so that you can gain you entrance to the March 16 freebies.

If you miss even one Saturday, then you're out for the month! And trust us, you don't want that to happen. There's some cool stuff to be had (while supplies last, naturally).

NOTE: This year, for the first time, we have given Savings Club Members complete access to each and every Saturday, whether you were at FCBD Mini-Con or whether you miss a Saturday. For you, it doesn't matter. If you're not one of our Comic Book Savings Club Members, why not? It only takes one title. Put one title on a list, we'll pull it for you when it comes out, pick up at least once a month, and you'll gain access to amazing savings and special access at FCBD Mini-Con and FCBMonth every year. Ask Ben for a sign up form when you come in and he'll get you started.

FCBMonth's comic book freebies

  • May 2 - We're giving out 20,000 free comic books (while supplies last).
  • May 9 - Miscellaneous Free Comic Book Day titles from 2014 and Free Comic Book Halloween comics from 2014/2015. JUST ADDED: 3 different Valiant previews and one Titan comics preview comic book.
  • May 16 - Image Comics best selling #1 issues in mint condition!
  • May 23 - Marvel Comics #1 issues and Vintage toys (while supplies last)!

There's some fun stuff in this video, especially from Sac City Rollers, Supreme Pro Wrestling, Stormpool, and the West Coast Avengers -- probably even make you LOL.

Celebrating Children's Book Week May 4-10, 2015

We're excited to announce that we're celebrating Children's Book Week (CBW) for the first time this year.

For 96 years CBW has been promoting literacy, and it's about time this local comic shop became involved.

As you know, we promote reading with Rolly's Reading Program, a program that provides a deep discount on all our children's titles, and Rolly's Summer Reading Program, which ran for the first time in 2014.

We're offering the following two specials for CBW, May 4-10, 2015:

  • 25% OFF all comic book titles for Children (from the young children's wall) and for Teen readers. Young children and teens must be present with an adult/parent for this offer to be valid.
  • Comic Book Trade: When children/teens create their own comic book (1-page minimum required) and give it to us, we'll let them choose 1 free comic book (from select titles). Download and use our 1-page panel layout or make your own.
"Children's Book Week is administered by Every Child A Reader, a 501(c)(3) literacy organization dedicated to instilling a lifelong love of reading in children."

The official hashtag for CBW is #CBW15.

HeroicGirls.com and John Marcotte at FCBD Mini-Con 2015

Note: Get the full lineup of FCBD Mini-Con 2015 guests here. FCBD Mini-Con starts at 9 am this Saturday, May 2.

John Marcotte is the founder of HeroicGirls.com and a writer for the HuffingtonPost.com. He also recently spoke at TEDxSacramento on the topic, "Girls can be their own superheroes".

John started HeroicGirls.com with the explicit purpose of "empowering girls by advocating for strong role models in alternative media — particularly comics."

In keeping with that goal, HeroicGirls.com recently ran a successful hashtag campaign, #WheresNatasha, to shed light on Disney's and Marvel's neglect of the Black Widow in the majority of their merchandising.

Speaking about HeroicGirls.com, John adds, "We want to get more girls and women involved in the creation and consumption of comic books as a tool to increase assertiveness and self-esteem, and to help them to dream big."

At Free Comic Book Day Mini-Con, John will be doing this by polling local girls and women about their love of comics. He's also starting a book club. Talk to John to learn more.
